A form of social organization in which women
head the family, and descent and relationship
are reckoned through the female line.
Matriarchy, often associated with polyandry
(one wife with several husbands), occurs in
certain parts of India, in the South Pacific,
Central Africa, and among some North American
Indian peoples. In matrilineal societies,
powerful positions are usually held by men
but acceded to through female kin.
